Fix Android 'System UI has stopped' (Loop Error)
Updated: 11/29/2025
You are using your phone, and suddenly the screen flashes black, the wallpaper resets, and you see a pop-up: 'System UI has stopped' or 'System UI isn't responding'. This is the Android equivalent of Windows Explorer crashing. It means the interface layer of your phone has crashed, usually due to a conflict with the Google App or a corrupted widget.
Table of Contents
Method 1: Uninstall Google App Updates
Historically, bad updates to the main Google App are the #1 cause of this loop.
Step 1: Settings
Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps.
Step 2: Find Google
Tap on Google (the G icon). Tap the three dots in the top corner and select 'Uninstall updates'. Restart your phone. If the error stops, wait for a patch before updating again.
Method 2: Clear System Cache Partition
This clears the temporary files used by the OS to boot up. It does NOT delete your photos or contacts.
Step 1: Recovery Mode
Turn off your phone. Hold Power + Volume Up (buttons vary by model) until the logo appears.
Step 2: Wipe Cache
Use Volume buttons to scroll down to 'Wipe Cache Partition'. Press Power to select. Once done, select 'Reboot System Now'.
Method 3: Check Widgets
If this happens only when you unlock your phone, a widget on your home screen might be broken. Remove all widgets (Weather, Clock, Calendar) and see if the crash stops.
