Fix Apple Pay Error 9157 Payment Could Not Be Completed (2025)

You double click the side button, hold your iPhone near the reader, feel the small vibration, and then instead of the done checkmark you see a red warning with Payment Not Completed, Error 9157. It is embarrassing standing at a checkout when Apple Pay suddenly refuses to work, especially if the physical card is at home. The good news is that Error 9157 usually points to a communication or verification problem that you can solve yourself, not a permanent block on your wallet.

Method 1: Check Card Status And Remove Old Tokens

In the Wallet app tap the Add button, choose Debit or Credit Card, and follow the instructions to scan or manually enter the card details. When your bank sends a verification code or asks you to confirm through their app complete that step immediately, then test Apple Pay again on a small purchase.

Method 2: Fix Device Region, Network, And Security Settings

In Settings go to Face ID and Passcode or Touch ID and Passcode and confirm that Wallet and Apple Pay is enabled. If authentication keeps failing, remove your existing face or fingerprint and enroll it again so the secure enclave can generate fresh keys for payments.

Warning: Never disable your device passcode entirely to try to fix Apple Pay, the wallet requires a secure passcode to protect your cards, and turning it off can remove all cards from the device.

Method 3: Coordinate With Your Bank Fraud And Contactless Limits

Once the bank confirms that your card and wallet are clear, test Apple Pay with a small purchase at a different terminal or a low value online transaction. If the small payment succeeds, your card token is healthy again, and you can return to normal use while watching for any future 9157 codes.
