Fix Call of Duty Dev Error 6068 (DirectX Crash) - Ultimate Guide
Updated: 11/29/2025
You are dropping into Urzikstan, checking your loadout, and suddenly the screen freezes. The sound loops for a second, and you are staring at your desktop with a small, cryptic window: Fatal Error: Dev Error 6068. This is arguably the most common crash in Modern Warfare III and Warzone history. It technically means your GPU stopped communicating with the DirectX driver, usually because it was pushed too hard or encountered an unexpected instruction.

The DirectX 12 Conflict
Call of Duty runs natively on DirectX 12, which is powerful but unstable on certain overlay setups. The crash usually happens due to:
- GPU Instability: Even factory overclocks on NVIDIA cards can trigger this.
- RAM Timing: XMP profiles that are slightly unstable.
- Overlay Conflicts: Discord, GeForce Experience, or Xbox Game Bar fighting for screen control.
Method 1: Force DirectX 11 (The Golden Fix)
Forcing the game to run on the older, more stable DirectX 11 mode fixes 6068 for about 70% of players.
Step 1: Open Battle.net / Steam
If on Battle.net, click the Gear Icon next to Play and select Game Settings.
Step 2: Add Command Line Argument
Check the box for 'Additional Command Line Arguments' and type this exactly:
Click Done and launch the game. Note: You might see a slight FPS drop, but the crashing should stop.
Method 2: Lower Video Memory Scale
By default, COD tries to use 85-90% of your VRAM. If background apps spike, the game crashes. We need to limit this.
Step 1: Locate Config File
Go to Documents > Call of Duty > players. Open the file named options.3.cod22.cst (or similar) with Notepad.
Step 2: Edit VideoMemoryScale
Press Ctrl + F and find VideoMemoryScale. Change the value from 0.90 or 0.85 to:
Save the file. This caps the game at 65% VRAM usage, leaving breathing room for your system.
Method 3: Clean Install Graphics Drivers
Don't just update; you need a clean slate. Use a tool like DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to strip the old drivers, then install the latest NVIDIA/AMD driver without the 'GeForce Experience' or 'Adrenalin' bloatware if possible.
