How to Fix ERR_CONNECTION_RESET in Google Chrome

Updated: 11/29/2025

You try to visit a website (like YouTube or Google), but the page loads instantly to a white error screen: 'This site can’t be reached. The connection was reset. ERR_CONNECTION_RESET'. This doesn't mean the website is down. It means the 'handshake' between your computer and the website was physically cut off by something on your end—usually a Firewall, VPN, or a corrupted TCP/IP configuration.

Method 1: The Complete Network Reset (CMD)

Your computer's socket settings (Winsock) might be corrupted. Resetting them forces Windows to rebuild the connection pathway.

Step 1: Admin Command Prompt

Search for cmd in the Start Menu, right-click, and Run as Administrator.

Step 2: The Magic Commands

Enter these commands one by one, hitting Enter after each:

netsh winsock reset netsh int ip reset ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns
Requirement: You MUST restart your computer after running the 'netsh' commands for them to take effect.

Method 2: Check LAN Settings (The Proxy Virus)

If you recently installed free software, it might have enabled a 'Proxy Server' to route your traffic through ads. This blocks secure sites.

Step 1: Internet Properties

Press Win + R, type inetcpl.cpl, and hit Enter.

Step 2: LAN Settings

Go to the Connections tab and click LAN settings.

Step 3: Uncheck Proxy

Ensure that 'Use a proxy server for your LAN' is UNCHECKED. Only 'Automatically detect settings' should be on.

Method 3: Clear SSL State

Your computer stores security certificates to load sites faster. If one corrupts, the secure connection resets.

Go back to Internet Properties (inetcpl.cpl). Click the Content tab. Click the button that says Clear SSL state. You should get a success message instantly.
