Fix Google Gemini 'Something went wrong' Error (2025)
Updated: 11/29/2025
You type a prompt into Google Gemini, the sparkle animation plays, and then... text fails to appear. A red message pops up: 'Something went wrong. Please try again.'. This generic error usually means the AI's context window for your specific chat session has corrupted, or a browser extension is blocking the WebSocket connection Google uses to stream the text back to you.
Table of Contents
Method 1: Clear 'Gemini Apps Activity'
Unlike ChatGPT, Gemini's memory is tied deep into your Google Account history. If a session gets stuck, you need to wipe the AI's short-term memory.
Step 1: Go to Activity Controls
Visit myactivity.google.com/product/gemini while logged in.
Step 2: Delete Recent
Click Delete and choose 'Last hour' or 'Last day'. This clears the corrupted session token causing the loop without deleting your entire history.
Method 2: Disable 'Dark Reader' or AdBlock
Gemini uses complex HTML rendering to display code blocks and tables. Extensions that force Dark Mode or block scripts often break the response container.
- Test: Open Gemini in an Incognito Window (Ctrl+Shift+N).
- Result: If it works in Incognito, one of your extensions is the culprit. Disable them one by one.
Method 3: Switch Google Accounts
Sometimes a specific Google Workspace (Corporate/School) account has a temporary suspension or limit on AI usage.
Click your profile picture in the top right and switch to a personal @gmail.com account. If the personal account works, your work admin has likely restricted Gemini access.
