Fix Google Pay 'Your Phone Can't Make Contactless Payments'
Updated: 11/29/2025
You are at the checkout, a line of people behind you. You tap your phone, and it vibrates with a rejection: 'Your phone can't make contactless payments' or 'Device doesn't meet security requirements'. This is an automated security lockout. Google Wallet disables NFC payments if it suspects your phone's operating system has been tampered with (Rooted) or is uncertified.

Why did this happen suddenly?
Even if you didn't 'hack' your phone, this can happen if:
- Bootloader is Unlocked: You unlocked it years ago and forgot.
- Beta Android Version: You installed a developer preview of Android.
- Play Protect is Off: You disabled Google's built-in antivirus.
Method 1: Check Play Protect Certification
If your device isn't certified, Google Pay shuts down.
Step 1: Open Play Store
Tap your profile picture in the top right > Settings.
Step 2: About
Expand the 'About' section. Look at 'Play Protect certification'. If it says 'Device is not certified', you cannot use Pay until you update your OS or relock your bootloader.
Method 2: Clear Google Play Services Cache
Sometimes the security token just glitches out.
Step 1: Settings
Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps.
Step 2: Google Play Services
Find Google Play Services (not the Store). Tap Storage > Clear Cache. Restart your phone and try the payment again.
Method 3: Check NFC Settings
Ensure your NFC is actually on and set to the right app.
- Go to Settings > Connected Devices > Connection preferences > NFC.
- Ensure 'Contactless payments' default app is set to Google Wallet (not your banking app or manufacturer app).
