Fix HBO Max 'Can't Play Title' Error (TV & PC)

Updated: 11/29/2025

You select a movie, the three dots pulse, and then: 'Can't Play Title. We're having trouble playing this video. Please try again later.' This generic error code usually hides a specific problem: HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) failure. Basically, the app thinks you are trying to screen-record the movie, or your HDMI cable isn't secure.

Method 1: Check HDMI Connection (TV/Console)

If you use a Roku, Fire Stick, or Console plugged into a TV, the handshake between the device and the TV might have failed.

Step 1: Reverse the Cable

Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends. Swap them (plug the TV end into the box, and vice versa).

Step 2: Try a Different Port

Move the device to HDMI 2 or HDMI 3. Older HDMI ports (1.4) sometimes fail the 4K DRM check required by HBO.

Method 2: Disable VPNs

HBO Max has the strictest geo-blocking in the industry. Even if you are in a supported country, leaving a VPN on (even for work) will trigger the 'Can't Play Title' error instantly.

Warning: Ensure you disable any 'Smart DNS' settings in your router if you previously set them up to bypass region locks.

Method 3: Sign Out of All Devices

If your account is being used by too many people, the server locks playback streams.

  • Go to Settings > Devices.
  • Select 'Sign All Devices Out'.
  • Wait 5 minutes, change your password, and log back in. This clears any 'ghost' sessions blocking your playback.
