Fix Minecraft 'Outdated Server' or 'Outdated Client' Error
Updated: 11/29/2025
You try to join a multiplayer server (like Hypixel or a friend's Realm), and it blocks you with red text: 'Outdated Server! I'm still on 1.20.4' or 'Outdated Client!'. This is not a bug. It simply means your Minecraft installation does not match the version the server is running. Since Minecraft updates frequently, this version mismatch is the #1 reason players can't connect.
Table of Contents
Method 1: Change Version in Launcher (Downgrade)
If the server is older than your game (e.g., Server is 1.8.9 for PvP, but you are on 1.21), you must downgrade.
Step 1: Installations Tab
Open the Minecraft Launcher. Click Installations at the top.
Step 2: New Installation
Click New Installation. Name it 'PvP Mode' or whatever you want.
Step 3: Select Version
In the 'Version' dropdown, scroll down until you find the exact number the server requires (e.g., release 1.8.9). Click Create and Play.
Method 2: Update the Server (For Hosts)
If you own the server and your friends get 'Outdated Server', you need to update the jar file.
- Stop your server.
- Download the latest
server.jarfrom Minecraft.net. - Replace the old jar file in your server folder.
- Restart the server.
Method 3: Enable 'Snapshots' (If Server is Newer)
If the server is running a beta version, you won't see it in the list by default.
In the Launcher > Installations tab, check the box in the top right that says Snapshots. Now you can select the latest experimental versions to match the server.
