Fix Xbox Error 0x803f8001: 'Do you own this game or app?'
Updated: 11/29/2025
You click on a game you have played a thousand times, but the Xbox stops you: 'Do you own this game or app? (Error 0x803f8001)'. This is the digital equivalent of being locked out of your own house. It happens when the console cannot verify your digital license with the Microsoft servers, usually due to a momentary internet dip or a 'Home Xbox' desynchronization.
Table of Contents
Method 1: Set as 'Home Xbox'
If the internet goes down, you can only play digital games if the console is designated as your 'Home' device. This downloads the licenses permanently to the hardware.
Step 1: Open Settings
Press the Xbox button. Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization.
Step 2: My Home Xbox
Select My home Xbox. Check the box that says 'Make this my home Xbox'. Restart the console. Now your games will launch even if you are offline.
Method 2: Insert the Disc (If Applicable)
It sounds obvious, but if you own the Disc Version of a game, the disc is your license key. You cannot play the game without the disc in the drive, even if the data is installed on the hard drive.
Method 3: The Hard Power Cycle
Sometimes the license cache in the RAM gets stuck.
- Hold the Xbox Power button on the console for 10 seconds (until it shuts off).
- Unplug the power cable.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug back in and turn on. This forces a fresh license check with the server.
