Fix Gmail 'Temporary Error (500)' - Numeric Code Fix
Updated: 11/29/2025
You try to open an email, and the screen turns into a list of code with the message: 'Temporary Error (500). We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable.' Despite the name, this error can last for days if you don't fix the root cause. It happens when your browser sends a corrupted request header to Google's servers.

Method 1: Clear Gmail Cookies Only
You don't need to wipe your whole browser history, just the Gmail data.
Step 1: Settings
In Chrome, go to chrome://settings/siteData.
Step 2: Search Google
Type mail.google in the search bar.
Step 3: Remove
Click the Trash Can next to the Gmail entries. Refresh the page and sign in again.
Method 2: Disable 'Net-Scanning' Extensions
Extensions that scan your email for coupons, grammar, or tracking pixels often break the Gmail UI.
- Open Extensions (Puzzle Piece Icon).
- Disable Grammarly, Honey, or AdBlock temporarily.
- Reload Gmail. If it works, one of those extensions needs an update.
Method 3: Use the HTML Version (Emergency Access)
If you absolutely need to read an email right now and the main site is broken, use the Basic HTML mode.
Go to this URL:
This loads a retro version of Gmail that works even on broken browsers or slow connections.
