Fix Telegram Stuck on 'Connecting...' (Updateing)
Updated: 11/29/2025
You open Telegram, but your chats are outdated. At the top of the screen, it just says 'Connecting...' or 'Updating...' with a spinning wheel. This means the app cannot reach the Telegram MTProto servers, usually due to a blocked port, a dead Proxy setting, or an ISP restriction.
Table of Contents
Method 1: Disable Proxy Settings
If you previously used a Proxy to bypass a ban, that proxy server might be dead now.
Step 1: Open Data Settings
Tap the Three Lines (Menu) > Settings > Data and Storage.
Step 2: Proxy Settings
Scroll down to Proxy Settings. If 'Use Proxy' is turned ON, turn it OFF. The app should connect instantly.
Method 2: The IPv6 Toggle
Telegram's connection protocol sometimes struggles with IPv6 addresses on mobile networks.
- Android: Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names. Select your APN. Change 'APN Protocol' to IPv4 only.
- iOS: You cannot change this manually, but toggling Airplane Mode for 10 seconds forces a network refresh.
Method 3: Check 'Background Refresh'
If it only connects when you open the app but doesn't send notifications, your OS is killing the background process.
